The TempTouch personal dermal thermometer is designed for use in the home environment by a person with diabetes that has been diagnosed with neuropathy of the lower extremities. People that have neuropathy (reduced feeling in their feet) are at a high-risk to develop foot ulcers that can potentially lead to amputation. Clinical studies have shown that before an ulcer breaks the surface of the skin on the foot, inflammation or heat may develop. The TempTouch device should be used on a daily basis by the patient to detect inflammation before the ulcer breaks the surface of the skin. Once the inflammation is detected, actions can be taken by the patient in consultation with their podiatrist or other practitioner to potentially avoid the ulcer and further complications such as infection, gangrene and amputation. The TempTouch is an infrared thermometer that is non-invasive and is not painful to use. It is battery operated and designed to last for approximately six months, assuming daily use, before the battery must be changed. To change the 9-volt battery, remove the battery cover as noted in the above drawing below.
